Back in the 50s there were so few Muskie fishermen in Minnesota, you could fish all season and not see another person casting Muskies. The catching of a big Muskie was also a bigger deal back then. Many times, when Edwin caught a big Muskie, it was on the 10:00 pm news before he could get home. He also made a couple appearances on a local TV fishing show, Rollie Johnson's Outdoors. The sponsor of that show, Hamm's Beer had the best commercials ever, labeled "Land of Sky-Blue Waters"

In 1962, Edwin was asked to join a small group of fishermen to compete in the first international Muskie Tournament. It was organized by Ray Ostrom of Ostrom's Marine in Minneapolis. This group of Muskie fisherman would have a direct impact on the birth of Muskies, Inc. The tournament was held on Lake of the Woods in Nestor Falls, Ontario. Ray Ostrom had asked a writer from the St. Paul Pioneer Press to come along and write an article about the tournament and Ray Ostrom's introduction of a new lure called the Rapala. To Ray's dismay, that writer was so impressed with Edwin and his hand-made Muskie baits, he wrote this article instead.

Fishing Buddies

Bruce's son Blake became interested in Muskie fishing, so they started fishing together when Blake was just 7 years old. They even placed in a Muskies Inc. tournament one fall in Hayward, WI.
One morning in July 1992, Blake and his father Bruce, were fishing one of their favorite lakes in Hayward, Wisconsin. Blake decided to try one of the new Giant Jackpots. Whatever Blake was doing with that Jackpot made it work incredibly well. Just under the surface and side to side like his father could not believe. A couple minutes later, Blake had his first Muskie, then almost the next cast, his second fish. Blake was catching fish every other cast. Bruce put his rod down and just worked the trolling motor and net. Blake, at age 10, put on a clinic that day and made the Sawyer County Paper with a total of seven nice Muskie's all released in good condition, one over 45 inches. Note: The other Muskies in the paper that week, were killed.
