Forward-Facing Sonar

The latest perceived threat to Muskie fishing is forward-facing sonar. There are a lot of Muskie guys totally against the use of these systems for fishing Muskie, or for that matter fishing in general. These systems do help locate fish, but so does any sonar system. Forward-facing sonar is not allowed in most fishing tournaments. The question is, are we overreacting? This is not the first time something has come along that has Muskie guys thinking it will destroy the sport of fishing. I remember in 1955 my dad and his Muskie fishing buddy up in arms about the new bait casting reel from Garcia with Star-Drag. It was the first anti-reversing bait casting reel of the day and the biggest step forward in Muskie fishing, maybe ever. My dad was afraid it would allow rookies to go out and catch Muskie’s, killing to many fish. Back in the day without anti-reversing reels fighting a big fish was extremely difficult. I caught my first Muskie without an anti-revering reel and handles back-spinning about took my fingers off. What if those old Muskie guys got their way and anti-reversing reels could not be used to this day. There will always be something that comes along which seems to make catching fish too easy and no doubt they all help, but it will never be easy. My father told me many years ago, trying to stop these new products from being used, is a losing battle. And I must say, it's ok with me, he lost that battle against anti-reversing reels.
